3 Measure twice the distance from the rail to the outer edge of the first spring, add 5 cm (2 in.) or so, and fold the cord that distance from the end to form a loop. Hook that loop over the two tacks so that the loop is on the inside edge of the rail. Feed the two ends in between the tacks and under the loop and draw tight. Leaving a long tail of laid cord either end of the lashing is essential: this extra cord will be used to apply a second reinforcing lash later in the process.
4 Hammer down the tacks. You now have a secure lark’s foot fixing.
